The COVID-19 virus has reached every continent on the planet, except Antarctica. Singapore, my home country, once acclaimed as the “gold standard” for COVID-19 response has been humbled to a cautionary tale in recent months. I have been in lockdown at home since April 2020 and time passes really slowly.

남극대륙을 제외한 전세계가 코로나19 바이러스로 감염되었습니다. 싱가포르도 한때는 코로나19를 잘 대처한 모범사례국가였다가 최근에는 방역실패로 인해 어려움을 겪었습니다. 락다운이 발령된  4월부터 지금까지 저도 거의 집에서 격리생활을 해왔습니다만 정말로 하루하루가 길더군요. 

The COVID-19 virus spreads easily and stealthily so could North Korea really be virus-free? There has been much speculation that the virus has made its way into the country. If it has, there’s a very real risk of thousands of innocent people dying. Perhaps the best independently verifiable news I’ve heard so far is from the World Health Organization. According to the WHO report, their team confirmed zero cases to date.

빠르고 은밀하게 전파되는 코로나19바이러스에 과연 북한은 안전할까요? 이미 코로나19가 북한을 감염시켰을거라는 추측들이 많았습니다. 만일 그렇다면, 수천명의 무고한 생명을 앗아가는 무서운 재앙이 되었을 겁니다. 아마도 WHO의 보고서가 지금까지 가장 독립적이고 입증가능한 소식이지 않을까 싶습니다만, 보고서에 따르면 연구원들이 북한에서 발견한 감염사례는 없다고 합니다.

My old North Korean contacts are still cheerfully optimistic, telling me there’s no COVID-19 in their country and they await for things outside to improve so they can finally reopen their borders.

제 오래된 북한의 지인은 북한의 바이러스 상황에 대해서 꽤 낙천적으로 말하기를 북한에는 코로나19가 아예 없으며, 다른 나라들의 상황이 개선되어서 하루빨리 국경을 다시 열기를 고대하고 있다고 합니다. 

At this moment, North Korea can’t afford to risk an outbreak so their complete border shutdown may drag on longer. We’ll have to trust WHO’s report regarding the situation inside as there aren’t any other independently verifiable sources. The only other information we can glean would be from what the North Korean state media releases.

현재로서는, 북한은 혹시라도 있을 감염확대를 감당할수 없으므로 국경을 계속해서 봉쇄하는 정책을 이어갈 것으로 보입니다. 북한 내부의 상황에 대해서는 알수 있는 다른 독립적이고 입증가능한 대안적 소스가 없으므로, WHO의 보고서를 신뢰하는 것이 좋겠습니다. 그외에 우리가 얻을 수 있는 소스로는 북한국영매체의 보도가 되겠습니다.
